It was daybreak February 4th 1916, and the vessel was the Del la Pole, a 120ft Hull trawler, being used as a minesweeper to keep the Dover Straits open. It had gone aground on the Goodwin Sands.
The tide was so low that the North Deal lifeboat, the Charles Dibdin, had to wait 2 hours before the launch could continue.
