Guardship 1917

Pictured in the background of this linocut is the guardship 'Niger', which was anchored off Deal pier to help safeguard neutral ships from enemy attack.
On November 11th 1914, she was sunk by a German U-boat. The North Deal lifeboat 'Charles Dibdin', shown in the foreground, and the Kingsdown lifeboat 'Charles Hargrave' were two of the boats that rescued the officers and 77 crew from the water.
