On December 12th 1889, the Mandalay, carrying a cargo of railway tracks, struck the Goodwin Sands. The steam tug-boat Cambria, which is shown in the background of this linoprint, tried to free her but failed. However, the plucky North Deal lifeboat, the Mary Somerville, although damaged by the ship it was attempting to save, assisted her to safety, after 35 hours struggle.
