Towards the end of 1914, the SS Montrose was fitted with anti -torpedo nets and filled with cement, ready to scuttle outside Dover Harbour, to prevent the entry of German U Boats.
However, breaking loose from her moorings during a gale, the liner drifted out and was wrecked on the Goodwin Sands. Tugboatmen aboard began lighting flares to warn other ships, but then almost ran down the Walmer lifeboat, which had come to rescue them. All were saved.
